Adriana is a textile artist from Argentina. During this meeting in the south of France, the students will have the opportunity to learn from her and see her work in person. Three projects will be worked on. The first, a botanical alphabet designed by herself. Then, the iconic sweater-chair to create a sampler of visible mending techniques. And finally, students can bring clothes or any textile to mend.
Day 1: Botanical Alphabet
Students will receive a 50 x 65 cm fabric with a floral alphabet printed in silkscreen. During this session they will learn 4 simple stitches to introduce them to the world of embroidery. Adriana will guide the students and teach them all the tricks to make those simple stitches perfect, (or as best as each one can). They will also receive beautiful colored wool threads from Patagonia.
Day 2: Botanical Alphabet
During the second class students will continue embroidering the alphabet and as the class progresses the stitches will become more complex and interesting. They will continue using wool and Adriana will guide them to work some stitches with a hoop and others without a hoop, to become familiar with one method or another depending on the technique. By the end of the second day students will have learned 7 stitches in total and will receive a printout of the alphabet design with the names of all the stitches Adriana used to embroider her own alphabet.
Day 3: Play & Mend
At the beginning of the third day students will receive a new screen printed fabric with the iconic sweater chair design. Adriana will introduce students to the world of visible darning by explaining the basic techniques. She will then guide students through a fun game to prepare the fabric for mending. They will begin by applying the basic techniques of visible darning.
Day 4: Play & Mend
More complex techniques of visible darning will be explained during the fourth class. Different types of threads and yarns, as well as needles, will be provided to experiment with the different techniques. Students will receive a handmade booklet by Adriana to provide a useful guide for future mending of textiles at home.
Day 5: Wrap up meeting
During the last day of the retreat, students will choose which project they want to work on. They can bring any textile to mend during this session. They will delve into their favorite techniques and/or those they are unsure of. They will share the results to inspire each other. This day will be the saddest but also the most beautiful because the students will feel inspired to create, stitch and mend!
